New NWO-I real estate adviser Elisa Meijer likes engaging in dialogue
‘Each building is different and people determine how it is used’
In April this year, architect Elisa Meijer started as the new Strategic Adviser Real Estate Portfolio of NWO-I. Her task is to provide advice about the real estate of the nine NWO Institutes. She sees herself predominantly as a ‘functional’ architect because, as far as she is concerned, her first priority is ensuring that everybody has a pleasant working environment. ‘Of course, you also need to remain within budgets and stick to the planning, but these are not the only things I focus on. My motto is: listen, and ask what I can do for people.’

Highlight SRON: prime minister Rutte and science minister Dijkgraaf visit NWO Institute SRON
'Insane to see how much talent we have in Dutch science. Thanks to all the people working at organisations like this, we have a great reputation abroad.' Prime Minister Mark Rutte said this on Monday afternoon 9 October during a working visit to NWO Institute SRON in Leiden. Rutte visited the Dutch institute for space research together with science minister Robbert Dijkgraaf. Afterwards, the latter expressed 'super pride to show this great institute to our prime minister. I especially enjoyed the fact that we got to see such a broad spectrum of the scientific research taking place in the Netherlands'.

Rainbow flags flying at NWO/NWO-I during Coming Out Day
Column David van Walderveen: ‘In the knowledge that we define what is normal’
Wednesday 11 October was Coming Out Day, a day for devoting attention to the moment that lesbian women, gay men, bisexuals, transgender, intersex, queer and asexual persons (LGBTIQA+) openly express their sexual orientation or gender identity: the coming out. NWO/NWO-I celebrates Coming Out Day this year by flying the rainbow flag at all NWO Institutes and the offices in Utrecht and The Hague. This year, NWO-I colleague David van Walderveen (policy officer DIFFER) wrote a personal column about Coming Out Day.

Highlight NIOZ: RV Anna Weber-van Bosse gets state-of-the-art scientific equipment
Interview with scientific coordinator Prof. Gert-Jan Reichart
In December 2022, the contract for the construction of the new Dutch ocean-going research vessel, the RV Anna Weber-van Bosse, was signed at NWO Institute NIOZ on Texel. The new vessel, that will eventually replace the current research vessel RV Pelagia, will be designed for extreme flexibility to facilitate a wide range of marine research. The festive keel laying of the ship took place on 11 October on the shipyard. Symbolically, a coin was welded on the keel beam 'for good luck'. Scientific coordinator for the new construction, Prof. Gert-Jan Reichart, tells about the project in an interview.

News from the works councils
Following the departure of Jan van der Boon, what are the next steps in the temporary governance of NWO-I? The Group Works Council of NWO-I (GOR NWO-I) provided unsolicited advice about this to Caroline Visser (Foundation Board). Amongst other things, the works council emphasised that the organisation will benefit from transparency and clarity and asked the board to pay careful attention to the increased work pressure. The Central Works Council of NWO (COR NWO) will discuss the upcoming months how the temporary governance will develop and what this means for the governance of NWO-I in the longer term.
