Last year, Purple Friday fell on Friday 8 December. It is a day to express solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community by wearing purple-coloured clothing. Traditionally, the day is celebrated at schools but in recent years, higher education, research institutes and companies have also embraced this celebration of solidarity with the LGBTIQA+ community. Several NWO Institutes also celebrated Purple Friday. At CWI, the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) team presented themselves in purple on LinkedIn and on their Instagram account @cwi_amsterdam. DIFFER produced their internal newsletter in purple on that day to mark the occasion. NWO-I will continue to pay attention to this and other symbolic days in 2024. *LGBTIQA+ is the acronym for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer/questioning, asexual and other diverse sexual orientations and gender identities.

NSCR highlight: extensive research into the effects of freedom-restricting sentences
Under the leadership of NWO Institute NSCR and the WODC Research and Data Centre (the Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security’s knowledge centre) a long-term research programme will start into freedom-restricting sentences, such as community sentences, electronic tagging, conditional prison sentences and Halt trajectories (programmes to combat and prevent juvenile crime). The research focuses on gathering missing knowledge about decision-making, implementation and (un)intended effects of these sentences. Anja Dirkzwager (programme leader NSCR): “For the first time in the Netherlands, researchers will be able to follow a large group of juveniles and adults over a long period of time. In the study, we are working together with the organisations involved, such as the probation service (3RO), the Council for Child Protection and Halt.”
