Interview with Yvonne Roghair, head of Finance & Control at NWO-I
Collaboration to strengthen operations
Yvonne Roghair has been head of Finance & Control (F&C) at NWO-I since October 2023. “During my job interview with NWO-I, I was told I would be allowed to further develop the Finance & Control department. That really motivated me”, says Yvonne, for whom the world of research is a new work field. “It is magnificent. Each of the institutes does something different, which makes working with them so interesting. For example, at the start of February, I heard on the radio that NASA had successfully launched the PACE climate satellite. And that SRON helped build one of the instruments on board, the SPEXone. Then I proudly tell everyone at the breakfast table that this is the work of my NWO-I.”

NWO board chairman Marcel Levi officially reopened the renovated main building of the National Institute for Subatomic Physics Nikhef in Amsterdam on Thursday 29 February. The Nikhef building, he said, forms a unifying element in Dutch particle physics. “A connection between the international and national worlds of science, between fundamental and applied research and between the very smallest and very largest units in our universe,” Levi said on Thursday. The spectacular opening was witnessed by hundreds of Nikhef staff and invited guests, in the colloquium room and on the impressive wooden seating staircase of the new atrium, the Vertex.

ABP pension information for English-speaking employees
As an NWO-I employee, you build up a pension for later with ABP: the pension fund for people who work for the government or in education. The ABP information about your pension is mostly in Dutch, so English-speaking colleagues often have problems understanding it. Therefore, ABP has decided to meet the high demand for pension information in English. On Tuesday 9 April and on Wednesday 15 May ABP organizes an online English information session from 16:00 – 17:30 hours. Besides general information about the ABP pension scheme, ABP will consider subjects such as the transfer of accrued benefits, extra payments (ABP Extra Pension), ‘What happens when I leave the Netherlands’ and the 30% tax ruling.

Thursday, 15 February, the RV Wim Wolff was christened in the harbor of the NWO Institute NIOZ on Texel. This Research Vessel (RV) replaces the RV Navicula, which served for four decades in coastal research. The new vessel is named after the godfather of ecological research in the Wadden Sea, who passed away in 2018. "With the Wim Wolff, we have a comfortable, innovative and, above all, a sustainable vessel, with which we can face the future of research in the North Sea coastal zone, the Southwest Delta and the Wadden Sea," says Aarnoud van de Burgt, the head of NIOZ's National Marine Facilities Department.

A day that celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women worldwide and draws attention to gender equality and women's rights. It is a day to recognize and celebrate women's contributions to society, as well as raise awareness about the challenges women continue to face worldwide. And to strive for equal opportunities for everyone, regardless of gender - in science too!
