Triple portrait: NWO-I receptionists at work
All NWO Institutes are unique and the same is true of the colleagues who work there. Sometimes they have the same position. Although their work might be the same, their stories are always different. So, who are these colleagues? In this new section, we interview three of them each time. On this occasion, we meet receptionists Tosca Gouda (NWO Utrecht), Martijn Severijnen (SRON) and Remco Westra (CWI) who warmly receive visitors with a smile and a pleasant chat.

Open Access provides opportunities but beware of predatory journals

Publishing scientific articles is a vital part of a researcher’s academic career. That is because the funding of research is closely linked to the quantity and quality of a researcher’s publications. These articles are increasingly published via Open Access (OA) and NWO-I aims to achieve 100% Open Access. Although the Open Access policy provides opportunities, there are also pitfalls. For example, the NWO-I Open Access Advisory Panel warns for so-called predatory journals.

NWO/NWO-I celebrated Coming Out Day 2024
Column David van Walderveen: ‘Dump the closet!’
Friday 11 October 2024 was Coming Out Day, a day to devote attention to the moment that people open up about his/her/their sexual orientation or gender identity: their coming out of the closet, or their coming out. David van Walderveen (Strategic Support team leader at DIFFER) advocates in his column, specially written for Coming Out Day 2024 at NWO/NWO-I, that we should stop this coming out of the closet.

On 4 July 2024, the directors of the NWO Institutes travelled together to Brussels, where they visited Neth-ER (Netherlands house for Education and Research) and the Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the European Union in Brussels. The directors made important contacts there to ensure that the NWO Institutes become better aligned with European research and innovation policy, and to increase the visibility of the institutes in Brussels. Research and innovation at a European level is becoming increasingly important for NWO, as many research grants already come from European programmes.

Minister of climate and green growth on a working visit to NWO Institute DIFFER
On Friday 18 October 2024 Minister Sophie Hermans (Climate and Green Growth) visited the NWO Institute DIFFER in Eindhoven. The minister's working visit to the province of North Brabant focused on the energy transition, highlighting several state-of-the-art research projects. Focusing on hydrogen and nuclear energy, the opportunities for the province, especially in the high-tech manufacturing industry, were explored. The minister engaged in discussions with DIFFER experts, who are making significant strides in energy research. It became clear that there is no single solution for the energy transition, but rather that we must work towards an energy mix.

Administrative Unit for Research Groups at Universities (BUW) disbanded per 1 October 2024
On 1 October 2024, the Administrative Unit for Research Groups at Universities (in Dutch called BUW: Beheerseenheid Universitaire Werkgroepen) will be dissolved. The BUW was a business unit of NWO-I and consisted of university working groups where physics research took place at Dutch universities and knowledge institutions. Originally, the BUW arose from the FOM Foundation, which was transformed into NWO-I with other NWO divisions on 1 January 2017.

Highlight NSCR: research results help ticket inspectors and police officers to manage conflicts
During their work, ticket inspectors and police officers have a higher risk of experiencing threats or violence than employees in other sectors. This can lead to undesirable long-term consequences, such as absence due to illness and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A study by NSCR researchers reveals that certain behaviour – for example, an unnecessary show of force - from ticket inspectors and police officers increases the chance of violence, whereas other behaviours have a de-escalating effect. The researchers analysed camera footage and real-life conflict situations and assessed in which situations with citizens there is an increased chance of violence occurring. They subsequently formulated concrete recommendations to effectively manage conflicts, such as: ‘Stay calm and firm. Make sure the person you issue a fine to does not lose face’.

News from the works councils
NWO-I is constantly changing, and the works council continuously responds to this. Plans are taking shape for the addition of the Nijmegen HFML-FELIX magnet lab to NWO-I. The NWO Central Works Council (COR NWO) discusses this during each consultative meeting with the Executive Board representative. The COR NWO and the Executive Board representative also agreed on an interim improvement of several NWO Implementing Regulations, such as an increase in the reimbursement of kilometres travelled and a higher purchase budget for a bicycle. Finally, the Groups Work Council (GOR NWO-I) issued positive advice about the organisational change at the NWO-I office.
