Announcement: change in time keeping and leave registration from January 2025 |
NWO-I is working on a new process for recording hours and leave at all institutes and the NWO-I office. As part of the new process, you will register your days off (leave) in Youforce and your hours worked in Unit4. Youforce is the software that you already use to see your salary slip, for example, and to initiate changes in your personnel file. At some institutes and the NWO-I office, you are already able to register your leave in it. From January onwards, everyone at NWO-I will register their leave in Youforce. These hours of leave will then be automatically transferred to your timesheet in the financial system Unit4. Good to know: this means that in future, you will only have to enter your hours worked in Unit4. |

NWO Institutes included in Women Professors Monitor for the first time |
The Dutch Network of Women Professors (Dutch acronym LNVH) presented its annual Monitor on 9 December. In this publication, the network shares the latest insights about gender equity in Dutch academia, and provides an overview of the representation of women within universities, medical centres and other scientific institutions. This year, the ratio of men to women within NWO Institutes was also investigated for the first time. This revealed a slight improvement compared to previous years, but a lot of progress still needs to be made within NWO-I. |

Last October was the ‘Month of diversity’. Therefore, on 1 October, NWO-I organised a lunch lecture entitled ‘No more excuses: inclusive selection and equity in Dutch academia.’ This online lecture was attended by colleagues from the NWO Institutes and NWO-I office. It dealt with the ongoing challenges and opportunities for recruitment in the Dutch academic sector, with a focus on gender equity. Speakers Lidwien Poorthuis (Dutch Network of Women Professors – Dutch acronym LNVH) and Janna Heynen-Behnke (Eindhoven University of Technology – Dutch acronym TU/e) shared their experiences about recruitment strategies and creating an inclusive science environment for women. |

Pension at NWO-I: your pension pot for later |
As an NWO-I employee, you accrue a pension pot for later: your pension. Each month, both NWO-I and you put money aside, the pension premium. That money is managed by Algemeen Burgerlijk Pensioenfonds (ABP: a pension fund for the government and education sectors). When you reach pensionable age, ABP disburses that pension pot.
This and subsequent issues of Inside NWO-I will take a look at pensions in the broadest sense of the word. How is that savings pot for later realised, and what is possible en route to your pension date? We will explain how changes in your private or work situation can influence the size of your pension. And, we will consider what the Dutch pension means for temporary foreign employees (such as PhDs and postdocs). |

The Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina covers an area as large as Luxembourg and is the largest cosmic ray detector in the world. Researchers from 17 countries, including the Netherlands represented by NWO Insitute Nikhef, manage the observatory. On 16 November, the extension of the collaboration agreement was signed. Nikhef worked, amongst other things, on developing new detection stations to measure cosmic radiation. This upgrade makes it possible to collect data for the next ten years. Nikhef researcher Charles Timmermans expects breakthroughs in our understanding of the primary mass of cosmic radiation with the highest energy: “We are gaining a growing understanding of the depth of particle cascades in the atmosphere and, for example, how muons behave in these as well.” |
