Jelle de Plaa (SRON), Mirela Bajrami (AMOLF) and Daan van Loon (NIOZ) are all information specialists at an NWO institute. An information specialist oversees the entire flow of scientific information; from publishing to accessing publications, and from repositories to physical collections. Jelle, Mirela and Daan give us an insight into how they support their colleagues, the fascinating career paths that led them to their current positions and their love of good food, bison and swimming in the North Sea. |

From temporary to new governance model for NWO-I |
Over the past two years, NWO-I has been getting to grips with a new governance model that centres on a collaborative approach to governance and implementation. Following a thorough evaluation in 2024, some adjustments to the model were made. The result met with a positive response from the supervisory board and the central works council, which means that the new governance model is now final. On Wednesday, 23 April 2025, the board approved the new model, along with the associated amendments to NWO-I’s articles and internal regulations. |

Strategic Innovation Fund: 5 million a year to boost institutes’ national role |
In 2024, the NWO Institutes Organisation (NWO-I) launched its Strategic Innovation Fund. Through this fund, NWO-I makes an annual sum of 5 million euros available to encourage institutes to strengthen the role they play at a national level. Institutes can apply to the fund for investment in new strategic lines of research, highly experimental infrastructure or high-risk transitions. Institute directors are invited to submit new applications this spring. NWO-I spoke with Thecla van Wageningen, a policy advisor with a key role in the fund, about its significance to the institutes. ‘The fund enables the institutes to demonstrate their unique value for science in the Netherlands.’ |

NSCR highlight: Victims of sexual violence do not seek help |

Many victims of sexual transgressions and violence do not seek help. This applies to physical violence, such as rape, or online abuse, such as the unauthorised distribution of intimate images. Valérie Pijlman obtained her PhD at the NSCR and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam with research into help-seeking behaviour. ‘Victims feel ashamed, guilty or afraid of not being taken seriously,’ explains Pijlman. For the often young victims of online sexual abuse, the threshold to seek help is even higher. Targeted information and anonymous online support - via social media - that emphasises that victims are not to blame help them take the step towards seeking help, Pijlman concludes. ‘They need to feel safe and supported before they seek help.' |
