Interview: NWO-I professors on their research for a sustainable future |
Daan van Uhm (NSCR), Laura Villanueva (NIOZ) and Valentin Robu (CWI) are all researchers and professors at NWO-I and a Dutch university. Daan specialises in environmental criminology, Laura analyses the climate change response of marine microbes and Valentin studies the viability of artificial intelligence for renewable energy integration into smart grids. Inside NWO-I asks all three about their respective research, their chairs and professorial activities and how they like to spend their spare time. |

Research institutes NWO: knowledge security screening law undermines Dutch research climate |

The NWO Institutes are concerned about the content of the draft bill on knowledge security screening in its current form. The ten research institutes foresee problems with the feasibility of the bill and the additional regulatory burden it will entail. The bill will also lead to a deterioration of the Dutch research climate, making our country less attractive to scarce talent, which we urgently need. In their response to the internet consultation, the NWO Institutes express their concerns about the disproportionate nature of the bill. Other knowledge institutions have similar objections. |

KNAW and NWO-I present joint vision statement |
In a joint vision statement, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and the Foundation for Dutch Scientific Research Institutes (NWO-I) present the social and scientific added value of their national research institutes.
Together, the KNAW and NWO-I have twenty-two research institutes spread across the Netherlands, often located near a university. Twelve of these institutes are part of the KNAW, ten are part of the NWO institute organisation, or NWO-I. |

Highlight DIFFER: New technique helps both space missions to Mars and climate problem on Earth |
A technique that simultaneously helps improve space missions to Mars and addresses the climate problem on Earth: recent PhD research at DIFFER shows that this need not be science fiction. PhD researcher Xingyu Chen recently defended her thesis: 'The Plasma-Solid Oxide Interface: An experimental study of plasma-enhanced surface processes.' On Earth, the technologies Chen studied provide improved ways to recycle carbon, more efficient conversion of CO2 and the development of new materials for energy transition. For future Mars missions, the same technology will enable more efficient oxygen production at lower temperatures. This opens up opportunities for more compact, energy-efficient systems that are also suitable for the Mars environment. |

Highlight SRON: Ilse Aben wins Stevin Prize for detecting large methane leaks with TROPOMI |
At SRON Aben leads the TROPOMI team that weekly publishes a world map of major methane leaks. These leaks have a combined climate impact twice as large as the total greenhouse gas emissions of the Netherlands. Projects by the United Nations and the European Union, among others, use this data to close the leaks through diplomatic channels. The Stevin Prize is the highest Dutch award for the application of knowledge for society and amounts to 1.5 million euros for research. |

Start of the development of NWO-I-wide information platform |
The development of a new internal NWO-I-wide information platform started off on 8 July. The platform will be a secure environment (website) behind nwo-i.nl where all employees of the ten institutes and bureau NWO-I can find information about matters such as policy and human resources. NWO-I-wide employee information is currently available on nwo-i.nl (public), on local intranets, in this Inside NWO-I newsletter or is shared by email. By bringing these information flows together, and shielding them from a broad public, we will ensure more uniform, more efficient and more secure internal information. |
