Vanessa Evers on her first months as CWI director: "It is a gift to work with so much talent" |
Vanessa Evers started as director of the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) last summer. She feels at home in her new role: “It ‘is a gift to work with so much talent.” In this interview with Inside NWO-I, she talks about her first impressions, ambitions, her other positions and roles, and how she became captivated by science relatively late, only during her studies.

Now available to everyone at NWO-I: toolkits on knowledge security, scientific integrity and open science |
NWO-I compiles practical and applicable information in three useful toolkits |
What exactly does the term 'open science' encompass? What should I pay attention to when starting a research project that involves potential knowledge security risks? How do I discuss scientific integrity with my colleagues? The NWO-I office hopes to answer these kinds of questions with three useful, brand-new toolkits on the themes of knowledge security, open science and scientific integrity. The toolkits are now available to all NWO-I employees. |

Pension at NWO-I: a new pension system |
At NWO-I, you accrue pension via ABP, the General Pension Fund for Public Employees. On 1 January 2027, ABP will move to a new pension system - all pension funds have until 1 January 2028 to do this. In this new system, ABP will divide the collective pension pot into personal pots for all individual participants. The transition to the new system stems from the new Dutch Future Pensions Act (WTP). "A pension that has high purchasing power and that is as stable as possible is the goal", says ABP in a transition plan. What does this new system entail, and what does it mean for your pension and that of your surviving dependants? |

LNVH presents annual Monitor of Female Professors |
For the second year, NWO Institutes are also included in the study |
On 8 December, the National Network of Female Professors (LNVH) published its annual Monitor Female Professors. In the Monitor, the Network shares the latest insights into gender equality in Dutch academia and provides an overview of the representation of women within universities, medical centres and other scientific institutions. The KNAW and NWO Institutes have also been included in this study for the second year in a row. In general, the news is moderately positive: almost one in three professors in the Netherlands is a woman. This percentage is slightly lower at the relatively science-oriented NWO institutes. |

Chemists identify “football molecule” in space thanks to laser experiment at HFML-FELIX |
In the vast space between the stars, in what scientists call the “interstellar medium”, you can find a wide range of organic molecules. From honeycomb-like hydrocarbons to spheres of carbon that look like footballs. In a new study, an international team of researchers, led by Jordy Bouwman of University of Colorado Boulder and in collaboration with Sandra Brünken of HFML-FELIX, used experiments on Earth to mimic the chemistry deep in space. The group's results may have uncovered important steps in the processes needed to form these organic molecules over time. |

In the first half of 2026, a new information platform will go live for employees of our ten institutes and the NWO-I office. This new platform – accessible with single sign-on via SURF – will contain everything you need to know about employment conditions, health and safety at work, and education and training. In addition, you will be able to read about topics such as AI, knowledge security, and recognition and appreciation, find an overview of employee networks, and register for NWO-I-wide meetings. The new platform will bring together personnel information for everyone in the organisation in one place, making it easy to find and search. More information will follow in the new year, including in this newsletter. |
